2nd Interval

Spent the last interval working my tukus off. Work is abominable, as I’m sure it is for everyone of my ilk. Also had some family traveling so not much accomplished in this domain.

I did get some nice pieces from the 3D printer, though.

The piece above is the Tetrahedron and dual. The nested dual tetrahedron in the tetrahedron always seems like an optical illusion to me. The vertices of the inner dual do, in fact, lay coincident with the planar faces of larger tetrahedron. Meaning that the smaller tetrahedron is smack dab in the center of the larger one. Which it clearly is not – lol. Just does not look like it at all. And yet it is. Very cool.

The second piece is of course largely unphotographable. It’s a very fine piece, but there’s a lot going on in it, so very hard to capture with a 2D shot

Like I said, it’s a nice piece, but it’s really, really hard to see the 12 Rhombic Dodecahedrons that are surrounding the inner Rhombic Dodecahedron. But such are grids by their very nature. The grid “lines” in the print are very fine and quite nice and so it’s a joy to hold, poke, prod and contemplate.

The final piece in the haul is the first metal piece I’ve 3D printed.

It’s not large and, of course, another shape impossible to visualize from a single photo.

The second image provides a bit different perspective that may help. Who knows. In any event, I like the shape. Very cool.

Reading List

Been doing a decent amount of reading – the reduce of my funnel input over the last month. Some good stuff bubbling to the top, of course. I’m just constantly amazed at all the fantastic work that people do and then publish either code or papers or books or whatever. Makes it possible to learn 😉

Course notes: Geometric Algebra for Computer Graphics – SIGGRAPH 2019
This is a most excellent paper on Projective Geometric Algebra. Worth reading if you’d like to know more about such dark arts

Introducing Geometric Algebra to Geometric Computing Software Developers: A Computational Thinking Approach
Yes, this is a thing with me – lol. This is also a most paper on Geometric Algebra, written with an eye towards folks like me who implement software libraries, frameworks and (largely) monstrosities.

VELVET: An Adaptive Hybrid Architecture for VEry Large Virtual EnvironmenTs
Another oldie, but a goodie. A good paper on spatial publish/subscribe, area of interest management, etc.

Efficient Time Integration of Maxwell’s Equations with Generalized Finite Differences
Not really related to the current stream o’ fun, but an interesting paper I found on doing EM simulations with – of course – Face Centered Cubic and Body Centered Cubic grids. Recall it was another bloke doing much the same thing that finally triggered my understanding of the mapping between FCC ←→ Cubic addressing.

Well, that’s about all for now. Maybe some work on the Distributed Hash Table next…. Get some structure up for that while I let the geometry stuff stew some more…
